As a member of special engineering plastics, PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is widely used in industrial production because of its light weight, high strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and other characteristics. Because of its good biocompatibility and elastic modulus similar to that of human bone, it is known as a new generation of ideal orthopedic implant materials after titanium alloys.

PEEK fatigue properties

The phenomenon in which materials, parts and components are locally damaged at a certain point or at certain points under cyclic loading, and after a certain number of cycles, cracks are formed, or the cracks are further expanded until they are completely broken. Fatigue performance refers to the ability of a material to resist fatigue fatigue [1].

Today, let's talk about the fatigue characteristics of PEEK. Using the YY/T 1503 (ASTM F382) test standard, under the load of 800N, the frequency of 5Hz, and the number of tests of 1.2 million times, the AKSOPEEK® LCF bone plate (thickness 4mm) was tested. In the bending fatigue test, the performance is comparable to that of titanium alloys and better than that of pure titanium.

In order to further compare the fatigue strength of AKSOPEEK® LCF and titanium alloys, we selected four groups of 2mm thick titanium alloy (Ti-6Aal-4V) and AKSOPEEK® LCF splines for fatigue testing under the condition of 382N. 1 million times of fatigue did not fail, while the titanium alloy failed due to fatigue at 73,000 times, 82,000 times, 79,000 times, and 92,000 times, respectively.

Using the YY/T 0959 (ASTM F2077) test standard, under the load of 2000/4000N, the frequency of 5Hz, and the test times of 5 million times, the AKSOPEEK® Natural interbody cage (H is 6.3mm) was tested for compression fatigue, no Failure due to fatigue occurs. The static test before and after fatigue did not show a decrease in strength, and the compression yield of this type of cage was only at 12000N.

Deep cultivation of sports medicine

Changzhou Junhua Medical Technology is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jiangsu Junhua Special Plastics. It has established a special team to cooperate with customers in the medical industry to be responsible for the research and development, production and sales of medical polymer materials and products such as medical PEEK, PPSU, and LCF/PEEK thermoplastic composite materials. .

In 2021, in order to meet the development needs of domestic sports medicine, Changzhou Junhua Medical will actively cooperate with major domestic medical units to develop sports medicine molds, with the following advantages:

(1) Years of PEEK injection molding experience;

(2) Perfect sports medical development process;

(3) Miniature injection molding machines of the same brand and model complete seamless switching with friends;

(4) The perfect after-sales service system has been recognized by major domestic medical institutions.

Based on the present, focusing on the future. In 2021, Changzhou Junhua Medical officially launched the implant-grade PEEK project, which is in the second round of inspection. The results of the inspection will be announced around August 2022. In order to better standardize implant-grade PEEK, a new implant-grade PEEK will be added. AKSOPEEK series grades.

1) AKSOPEEK® Natural: Implantable PEEK pure material;

2) AKSOPEEK® HA: Hydroxyapatite improves biocompatibility implant-grade PEEK material;

3) AKSOPEEK® CF: chopped carbon fiber implant grade PEEK material;

4) AKSOPEEK® LCF: continuous carbon fiber implant grade PEEK material;
