PBI material usually refers to Polybenzimidazole, a high-performance, high-temperature-resistant synthetic polymer that belongs to the category of special engineering plastics. With its excellent thermal stability, flame retardancy, and chemical stability, it is widely used in high-end fields such as aerospace, fire protection, electronics, and automotive industries.

Core characteristics of PBI materials:

– Extremely high heat resistance: The decomposition temperature exceeds 600°C, it can be used for a long time at 310°C, and can withstand short-term exposure at 760°C without melting or dripping, and produces almost no smoke or toxicity when burned. – Excellent flame retardancy: The limiting oxygen index (LOI) is as high as 58%, much higher than most flame-retardant materials, and it hardly burns in air. – Good mechanical properties: It has high tensile strength and high modulus, making it one of the strongest engineering plastics available, suitable for use as high-strength structural materials. – Chemical corrosion resistance: It has good resistance to strong acids, strong alkalis, and various organic solvents, making it suitable for harsh chemical environments. – Low hygroscopicity & high comfort: The moisture absorption rate is about 15%, which is relatively high among synthetic fibers, and it is comfortable to wear, so it is often used in protective equipment such as fire suits.

Main applications of PBI:

Aerospace: Space suits, thermal shields, aircraft engine components, radar covers, etc. Fire protection and military: Firefighters’ protective clothing, military uniforms, bulletproof vests, etc. Electronics and electrical: High-temperature insulating materials, fuel cell membranes, sensor packaging, etc. Industrial fields: High-temperature filter materials, seals, conveyor belts, corrosion-resistant pipelines, etc.

Summary:

PBI is an “extreme environment-friendly” material that can maintain stable performance under harsh conditions such as high temperature, corrosion, and flame. Although it is expensive, it is indispensable in scenarios with critical safety and extremely high performance requirements.
