PEEK Ports

PEEK ports offer excellent physical and chemical properties, including safety, non-toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, high strength, corrosion resistance, and low water absorption. 80% of them are used for cancer treatment and chemotherapy drug infusions. They can also be used for intravenous infusions, parenteral nutrition solutions, blood products, and blood sampling.

What is a port?

A port, also known as an implantable venous catheter system, is a completely implantable closed intravenous infusion system. 80% of them are used for cancer treatment and chemotherapy drug infusions. They can also be used for intravenous infusions, parenteral nutrition solutions, blood products, and blood sampling. A port can be used for the infusion of a wide range of medications.

A fully implantable port, also known as a port, is a closed intravenous infusion system that is completely implanted subcutaneously and remains in the body for a long time. This device consists of a catheter positioned in the superior vena cava and a subcutaneous implantable port. The catheter is inserted through puncture of the internal jugular vein or subclavian vein, with the tip of the catheter positioned in the superior vena cava. A port is then placed in the subclavian fossa and connected to the catheter, providing a long-term venous access for intravenous fluids. Depending on the implantation site, these ports can be categorized as chest wall ports or arm ports. They can be used for medication infusion, fluid replacement, nutritional support, blood transfusion, and blood sampling.

Implantable-grade PEEK material offers excellent physical and chemical properties, radiolucency, and biocompatibility. It has successfully replaced metal and other high-performance resins in applications such as orthopedic oncology, plastic surgery, spine surgery, knee surgery, and craniofacial repair.

AKSOPEEK® Advantages

What are the advantages of AKSOPEEK® ports over traditional ports?

  1. Excellent biocompatibility;
  2. Low density, lighter and more comfortable to wear than metal PEEK ports;
  3. PEEK offers excellent thermal insulation and is less susceptible to heat accumulation in showers or sunlight;
  4. PEEK is inherently antibacterial, making long-term implants less susceptible to infection and complications;
  5. PEEK is corrosion-resistant and unlikely to react with infused liquid medications;
  6. PEEK is radiation-resistant and is not affected by radiation from radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

Implantable-grade PEEK: As the name suggests, PEEK materials used in the manufacture of implantable devices are called implantable PEEK. This material is commonly used in orthopedic implants (such as intervertebral fusion cages, ligament repair anchors, and joint interface screws), neurosurgical patches (such as artificial skulls and maxillofacial bones), and cardiovascular products (such as heart valves and pacemaker housings). In recent years, modified PEEK materials have become widely used in products with high mechanical performance requirements, such as oral implants and trauma bone plates. In addition to meeting the biocompatibility requirements of medical-grade PEEK, implantable-grade PEEK must also meet more stringent biosafety requirements, such as systemic toxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, hemocompatibility, and implantation reactions. It must also comply with the requirements of “YY/T 0660-2008 Standard Specification for Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Polymers for Surgical Implants.”

AKSOPEEK®

my country primarily relies on imports for implantable PEEK materials. Based on market feedback and the needs of national R&D projects, Jiangsu Junhua Special Plastics has launched the AKSOPEEK® series of domestic implantable PEEK materials.

Focusing on the present and looking to the future, Changzhou Junhua Medical officially launched its implantable PEEK project in 2018 and has obtained comprehensive third-party reports on biology, physicochemical properties, and aging. To further standardize implantable PEEK, we have added new implantable AKSOPEEK grades.

1) AKSOPEEK®: Implantable-grade pure PEEK

2) AKSOPEEK® HA: Implantable-grade PEEK material with hydroxyapatite for enhanced biocompatibility

3) AKSOPEEK® CF: Implantable-grade PEEK material with chopped carbon fiber

4) AKSOPEEK® LCF: Implantable-grade PEEK material with continuous carbon fiber
